Mud Rail Buggy

Camber is a angle measure of the inclination of the rear wheel, for outside or for inside, or ZERO (normal), as my Buggy and my BAJA. Really you understood "cambagem" very well.
The rear suspension of my Buggy is adjusted for about camber zero degree and the ride height is 17 cm (bottom of engine (carter plug) to ground). My Hilux is 25 cm. My BAJA is 16 cm. But I only do light off-road and these ride heights have worked very well, until now.

Many off-road riders want to change the ride height of their Buggies (Gaiolas) to cope bad dirt-roads, difficult trials, mud, etc. I don't do that anymore. At 71 is time to be a bit wise and wary. But if one adjusts the torsion bars and the spring plates more high the effect is a exagerated positive rear camber. In this case is important change the swing axles and use a IRS suspension. Really if one uses IRS suspension is possible lift the car (ride height 30 to 40 cm) and keep camber near zero. In Brazil VW Beetle was always made using swing axles, but Kombi has used IRS since 1978.

Volkswagen has began to make VW Beetle and Kombi in Brazil since 1960. Of course VW plants around the world make the same models with great similarity, but not exactly equal. There are little differences.

The frame (chassis) was shortened 25 cm (VW Beetle sedan is 2,40 meters). But with 2,15 meters of wheelbase my Buggy works very well. Of course the vehicle could be a little bit instable after 60 miles/hour, but it became extremely manoeuveble. Besides with a differential ring and pinion 8x35 is so difficult to reach 55 miles/hour (even using VW 1600 gas engine). The relation 8x35 make my Buggy less fast but stronger.

Mu Buggy have a Selective Hand Brake.
Middle lever stops both back wheels.
Left lever stops or reduces only the left back wheel.
Right lever stops or reduces only the right back wheel.
So this gadget tries to mimic a differential blocked with some success.
Really a good aid if you are stuck in the mud. Useful and cheap.

I must classified my Buggy as a Mud Rail Buggy 'cause it is able to ride in dirt-roads, some light trails, mud and streets. For dunes and sand I would have to change somethings, mainly the back tires. And the distance Amparo to seashore is for about 200 miles. Laughing Laughing
